eBay UK payouts explained: bank details, payout schedules, timing and why money is held
In short
eBay UK payouts go to one current or business bank account. For business sellers, funds usually become available about 24 hours after the buyer's payment is confirmed, payouts are daily by default, and a sent payout can take up to 4 business days to clear. Private sellers usually wait until 2 days after tracked delivery.
Key takeaways
- eBay pays into one current or business bank account, not a savings account.
- Business sellers' funds usually become available about 24 hours after the buyer's payment is confirmed.
- Payouts are daily by default, and a sent payout can take up to 4 business days to clear.
- Private sellers using tracked postage usually get funds 2 days after delivery.
- Holds delay payouts; prompt tracking and fast resolution of returns help release funds.
How do eBay UK payouts work?
eBay UK payouts are how the money from your sales reaches your bank. When a buyer pays, eBay holds the money as processing or pending funds, then moves it to available funds, then sends it to your bank account on your payout schedule. Each stage has its own timing, and the timing differs between business and private sellers.
This guide covers the bank account eBay will pay into, the payout schedules, how long each stage takes, the reasons money is held and what you can do to make cash flow predictable. Everything here is from eBay's getting paid help page, which you should check for changes.
Which bank account can eBay pay into?
eBay pays into one bank account only. Its page on updating bank details says you can have only one bank account on file for payouts, and it must be a current or business account, not a savings account.
- To change it: go to Payments in Seller Hub or My eBay, remove the current payout account and add the new one.
- Timing: eBay says it usually takes 2 business days for the change to be confirmed and payouts to be enabled for the new account.
- Verification: you can verify the account by logging in to your bank, uploading a bank statement or using small test deposits. This can take up to 2 business days.
Change your bank details early in a quiet week, not the day before a big payout is due. If a payout shows as Returned or Blocked, eBay says your bank information may be incorrect or you may need to verify more details.
How long do business sellers wait for their money?
For business sellers, sale proceeds first show as processing funds. eBay says they typically become available for payout about 24 hours after you confirm the buyer's payment, unless the order is on hold.
Payout schedules
| Schedule | When eBay starts the payout | On-demand withdrawal? |
|---|---|---|
| Daily (the default) | Every day there are available funds | No, daily is already the fastest |
| Weekly | Tuesdays | Yes |
| Fortnightly | Every second Tuesday | Yes |
| Monthly | The first Tuesday of the month | Yes |
Once eBay starts a payout, its status moves through created and in progress to funds sent. eBay says it can then take up to 4 business days to clear in your bank account, depending on your bank. A payout due on a bank holiday goes out on the next available payout day.
A worked example
Example: suppose a buyer pays on Monday morning and you are on daily payouts. The money is processing until around Tuesday morning, then available. eBay starts the payout that day, and your bank may show it anywhere from Tuesday to the following Monday, depending on how quickly it clears payments. On a weekly schedule, the same sale would wait for the Tuesday payout, so a Wednesday sale could take more than a week to reach you. The days are hypothetical, but the pattern explains why daily payouts suit most sellers who buy stock out of sales.
How long do private sellers wait?
Private sellers follow different rules. Their proceeds show as pending, then move to their eBay balance:
- Tracked postage: funds typically become available 2 days after delivery.
- Untracked postage, or tracked without delivery confirmation: 14 calendar days from the order date.
- Small orders: orders with a subtotal of £10 or less can become available straight away after positive buyer feedback.
- Tracked orders up to £750 can become available straight away after positive feedback following delivery confirmation.
- Local collection: within 24 hours of entering the confirmation code, or after the buyer scans the QR code.
eBay also offers private sellers faster payment, within 24 hours of the buyer's payment, once they meet criteria that include at least 10 completed sales with a combined total of £150 or more in the last 5 years, and no more than 2 open requests, cases or transaction defects in the last 12 months. Private sellers can use pending funds for postage labels and refunds. After a withdrawal, eBay says bank processing takes 0 to 4 business days.
The quickest way for a private seller to get paid sooner is simple: use tracked postage so delivery is confirmed.
Why is my eBay payout on hold?
A hold pushes back the dates above. eBay's payments on hold page describes three kinds, and knowing which one you have tells you what to do.
| Type of hold | What it covers | What eBay says about timing |
|---|---|---|
| Transaction hold | Funds from one sale, for example for new or infrequent business sellers, high-priced items, unusual selling patterns or a large increase in order volume | Usually resolved within 30 days. For unusual patterns or a volume jump, funds are typically available 2 days after delivery confirmation or 31 days after the buyer pays |
| Payment dispute hold | Funds linked to a problem the buyer reported, such as an item not arriving | Held until the case is closed; eBay may hold funds up to 90 days from when the dispute arises |
| Payout hold | All payouts to your account | Usually needs action from you, such as fixing a registration mismatch or a payment method eBay cannot charge fees to |
eBay says holds are lifted when it can confirm the order has arrived, or when a case is resolved in your favour, and that adding tracking can help you receive funds faster. Our guide to eBay payments on hold goes through each reason in more depth.
Things that help release funds:
- Upload valid tracking promptly, so delivery is confirmed as soon as it happens.
- Resolve returns and requests quickly, before they become cases.
- Keep your registration details and payment method up to date, so a payout hold never starts.
- Grow steadily on a new account rather than with a sudden jump in volume.
Planning for a new account
A new business account should expect transaction holds at first: eBay says new business sellers typically receive funds within 31 days, sometimes longer. If you need to buy stock before you are paid, that month of waiting is the biggest cash flow risk in your first season. Start with a smaller range, use tracked services on every order, and keep enough cash to cover a month of purchases.
What else affects the amount you receive?
The payout is not the same as your sales total. eBay deducts its fees and any charges from your proceeds, refunds come out of your funds, and if a buyer pays in a different currency the payment is converted at the exchange rate from the time of sale, which also applies to refunds. eBay's seller currency conversion charge is 2.5%, rising to 2.75% from 1 December 2026. The Payments tab in Seller Hub shows the breakdown for each payout, and reconciling it once a month is the easiest way to catch a fee you did not expect. Our guide to record keeping for eBay sellers sets out a simple monthly routine.
Which payout problems come up most, and how do you fix them?
| What you see | Likely reason | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Payout status Returned | An issue with the bank or with eBay; bank details may be wrong | Check the account number and sort code in Payments, then contact eBay if they are correct |
| Payout status Blocked | The payout method is invalid or blocked | Add or verify a current or business account |
| Payout status Cancelled | The payout was stopped | eBay returns the balance to your available funds; check the reason in Payments |
| No payouts after changing bank | The new account is still being confirmed | Allow about 2 business days, as eBay says |
| Funds sent but not in the bank | Bank clearing time | Allow up to 4 business days before chasing |
| All payouts held | A payout hold, for example over registration details or a fee payment method | Follow the instruction in Seller Hub or eBay's email |
Keep a short note of each problem and its fix. Most payout issues come back in the same form, and a note saves you working them out twice.
How can you plan cash flow around payouts?
- Stay on daily payouts unless you have a reason not to. Slower schedules only delay your money.
- Keep a cash buffer of at least a week or two of stock purchases, so a hold does not stop you fulfilling orders.
- Watch the bank holiday calendar. Payouts slip to the next payout day, and banks do not clear on bank holidays.
- Use the payout report to match each payout to its orders, fees and refunds.
- Set aside tax and VAT from each payout, because the payout includes money that is not yours to spend.
What to do next
- Check in Seller Hub that your payout account is a current or business account in your name or your business's name.
- Confirm your payout schedule and switch to daily if you are on a slower one by mistake.
- Open the funds tracker and note any held orders and their expected release dates.
- Reconcile last month's payouts against your sales report.
Knowing exactly when money arrives turns payouts from a worry into a number you can plan around.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get eBay to pay into a savings account?
No. eBay says the payout account must be a current or business account. You can have only one payout account on file at a time.
Why has my payout not arrived after eBay says funds sent?
eBay says a sent payout can take up to 4 business days to clear, depending on your bank. Weekends and bank holidays add to that. If it shows as Returned or Blocked, check your bank details.
Can I withdraw my eBay funds early?
If you are on a weekly, fortnightly or monthly schedule, you can request a payout of available funds on demand. On the daily schedule you cannot, because daily is already the fastest option.
Do I still get paid if I change my bank account?
Payouts resume once the new account is confirmed, which eBay says usually takes 2 business days. Make the change when no large payout is due, to avoid waiting.
